Feminine Energy

33PA and the collective known as PoetsArtists present the exhibition IWD: The Modern Female in celebration of International Women’s Day

For the entirety of March and April, 33PA and the collective known as PoetsArtists present the exhibition IWD: The Modern Femalein celebration of International Women’s Day. In addition to an online exhibition on Artsy, the show, which curator Amy Glovinsky says “honors women and their significant contributions to humanity,” is also viewable in person at 33PA's partner gallery 33 Contemporary in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.

Elena Caravela, Hell No, oil, 36 x 24"

Collectors can expect to find an assortment of paintings in a variety of mediums, depicting exactly what the title suggests—the modern female. Each artist provides their own insight on this theme, with some diving deep into symbolism and others, exploring controversial topics.

Artist Angelika Weinekötter leans on symbolism in her oil piece, Contemporary Eve, from her Dialogue of Speciesseries. “Each painting delves into a unique narrative, highlighting the intimate connections and transformative experiences shared across the species divide,” the artist notes.

For Contemporary Eve, depicting a woman holding an iPhone with a snake and foliage wrapped around her head, she says, “Nature and technology merge in a way that allows us to experience the ancient story of temptation in a modern context. The snake, a symbol of the biblical temptation in the Garden of Eden, reappears—only this time, it’s not an apple that captures the figure’s attention, but a smartphone. This subtle parallel points to the temptation of our era: where the snake once symbolized knowledge and insight, it’s now technology that promises us the world at our fingertips. But like the ancient temptation, there is a danger—the distancing from the real, natural world as we become increasingly entangled in the digital. This painting invites us to pause and reflect: have we traded the real world for an illusion?”

O’Neil Scott, Inner Growth, oil on canvas, 60 x 48"

Elena Caravela is fascinated by human gestures, and constantly explores new avenues for technique, composition, application of paint and new materials in an effort to capture something of the human experience. “Behind every face is a complexity of intelligence and emotion and perhaps even an elusive spirit that I find mesmerizing,” she shares. “I worship the majesty of the natural world and her creatures, and find perfection there that I’m unwilling to question.”

In her show piece Hell No, the artist highlights the unfortunate and all too ubiquitous issue of sexual assault, and unwanted sexual advances that so many women endure. “In my lifetime, I have never met a single woman who has not experienced fear and displeasure of protecting her autonomy and body from this,” says Caravela. “In an age when humans have become more socially evolved and aware, there are still those who find themselves in situations powerless to deal with this ancient and all too common projection of animalistic power. I commend all those who possess the courage to stand up and say ‘hell no.’ I thank those who face public scrutiny when coming forward to share their stories and seek justice when threats and physical force have overcome their will…”

Ana Schmidt, Emily & Vicky, acrylic on canvas, 50 x 50"

These powerful and evocative pieces, and so many more, are on view beginning March 1 online and at 33 contemporary’s Lake Worth Beach, Florida, location. The show closes on April 30. —
